Chaque année, mon lycée monte une comédie musicale. Cette année, c'était le fameux "Into The Woods" de James Lapine et Stephen Sondheim. Je faisais partie de l'équipe son en tant qu'assistante. Ça m'a permis de mettre un pied dans mon futur métier!
Every year, my high school puts up a musical. This year, it was the famous "Into The Woods" by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim. I was part of the sound crew as an assistant. It gave me the chance to get a glimpse of my future job!
La mise en place
Une semaine avant le show, toute l'équipe technique s'est retrouvée au Center For the Arts (CFA), le théâtre où avait lieu le spectacle. Ils ont construit une plateforme sur la scène pour l'orchestre qui a joué toute la musique en live (voir les images ci-dessous). L'équipe son a dû le sonoriser, brancher tous les micros, les moniteurs, les synthétiseurs, scotcher tous les fils. Puis on s'est occupé des micros sans fils pour les acteurs. On était 4 assistants (Kyle, Johnny, Hayes et moi) pour aider l'ingénieur du son (Justin), tant au montage qu'aux répétitions qu'aux spectacles.
The building of the set
A week before the show, the whole technical crew met at the Center For the Arts (CFA), the auditorium where the show was happening. They built a platform on stage for the orchestra that played the whole music live (see pictures below). The sound crew had to place all of the microphones and plug them in, as well as the monitors and the keyboards, then taping all the cables down. Then we took care of the wireless microphones for the actors. We were 4 assistants (Kyle, Johnny, Hayes and I) to help the sound engineer (Justin) during the building of the set, the rehearsals and the shows.
Les répétitions
Pendant les 2 semaines qui ont précédé le premier show, on était au CFA de 16h à 22h (certaines équipes restaient encore plus tard) quasiment tous les jours. Pour ma part, je passais pas mal de temps à courir en coulisse pour changer les piles mortes des micros de certains comédiens. Le reste du temps, j'étais près de la console de mixage. Je regardais Justin gérer le son, parfois il nous expliquait ce qu'il faisait et pourquoi. J'étais vraiment contente de pouvoir travailler sur Into The Woods car dans ma classe de Recording Arts, on ne travaille pas beaucoup sur le son live.
The rehearsals
During the 2 weeks before the first show, we were at the CFA from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. (some crews had to stay even later) almost every day. Personally, I spent quite a lot of time running backstage to change the dead batteries in some actors' microphones. The rest of the time, I was around the sound console. I watched Justin running the sound, sometimes he explained us what he was doing and why. I was really happy to be able to work on Into The Woods because in my Recording Arts class, we don't work a lot on live sound.
Les spectacles
Il y a eu au total 8 spectacles. J'avais mon rituel pour les micros : j'arrivais, je changeais les piles des micros, les comédiens venaient les prendre, je leur donnait des indications (comment le fixer, vérifier qu'il soit allumé et branché etc.). Quelques comédiens trouvaient mes indications drôles parce qu'au bout d'un moment, c'était robotique ce que je disais. Mais bon, il le fallait bien car il y avait toujours un micro mal fixé ou branché. Puis à la fin du show, je les récupérais tous. Quelques fois, Justin a laissé Kyle faire le son sur un des deux actes et je lui disais qui entrait à quel moment. Ca nous a entrainé pour le dernier samedi, où Justin n'était pas là. Ce spectacle-là a été un peu chaotique avec 3 micros non ou mal branchés donc les acteurs devaient chanter de pleine voix en attendant de sortir de scène. Mais on s'est bien débrouillé!
The shows
There were 8 shows total. I had my ritual: I arrived at the CFA, I changed the microphones' batteries, the actors came to get theirs, I gave them some directions (how to tape it, make sure it's on and plugged in etc.). Some actors found my directions funny because at some point, they were robotic and always the same. But well, I had to do it because there was always a microphone poorly taped or plugged in. Then at the end of the shows, I gathered them all. Some times, Justin let Kyle run the sound on one of both acts and I was telling him who was coming in and when. It was good practice for the last Saturday when Justin wasn't there. That show was kind of epic because we had 3 microphones half or not plugged in so the actors had to sing on voice until they could go offstage. But we did pretty good!
Quand le rideau tombe
Après l'avant dernier show, les gars ont fait un style de "strip show" en coulisse devant toute l'équipe. La tradition voulait aussi que pour le dernier show, un dimanche, tout le monde ait une mouche (point noir) sur le visage. À la fin de ce spectacle, Jarrah (la metteur en scène) a appelé les terminales qui ont fait partie de cette production. Les deux premières à être appelées étaient Giulia et moi, les "deux étudiantes venues de l'autre bout du monde". On a reçu une rose. À la fin, quand tous les terminales ont reçu leur rose, on s'est pris dans les bras avec Giulia et quelques larmes ont coulé. Pour une fois, j'ai participé à quelque chose où je sentais que j'avais entièrement ma place, où j'étais entourée de personnes formidables! C'est la meilleure expérience que j'ai eu jusqu'ici!
When the curtain falls
After the show before the last one, the guys made a sort of strip show backstage in front of the whole cast and crew. The tradition also said that for the last show, on a Sunday, we had to wear a mole on our face. At the end of that show, Jarrah (the director) called all of the seniors that were part of the production. The first two to be called were Giulia and me, the "two students from across the world". We were given a rose. At the end, when all of the seniors got their rose, Giulia and I hugged and some tears fell. For once, I was part of something where I felt like I fit totally in, where I was surrounded by amazing people! It was the best experience I have had yet!
